You or a loved one is having memory concerns.
Your journey starts here.
A physician's guide to 45 evidence-based risk factors for dementia — and a clear action plan for each one.
Most people navigating memory concerns don't know that the majority of dementia risk is modifiable. They don't know about the 45 distinct, peer-reviewed risk factors that can be identified, measured, and addressed. This book changes that.
My name is Michael Lowe. I'm a neurology resident physician with a specialty focus in memory care. I wrote this book because the gap between what the research shows and what patients are told is enormous — and it doesn't have to be. Every claim is backed by a published scientific citation.

What's inside: 45 risk factors across Six Pillars · How Alzheimer's is diagnosed · Current treatments including Leqembi and Kisunla · Is Alzheimer's genetic? · Caregiver First Aid Kit · Top 10 actions you can take today · Physician-reviewed apps and trusted resources · Every claim peer-reviewed and cited

Risk Factor 23: Dental Disease & Oral Inflammation
Periodontal disease affects nearly half of American adults and most people don't know they have it. The bacteria responsible — Porphyromonas gingivalis — have been detected directly in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Chronic oral inflammation elevates systemic inflammatory markers that cross the blood-brain barrier. What you can do: see a dentist, floss daily, ask about perio disease specifically. This is not a cosmetic issue.
Risk Factor 25: Gut Health & the Gut-Brain Axis
The gut microbiome communicates with the brain via the vagus nerve. An imbalanced gut promotes inflammation and disrupts neurotransmitter production. It also impairs the blood-brain barrier. New and growing research has identified specific microbial signatures associated with Alzheimer's. To do: prioritize fiber, add fermented foods, minimize ultra-processed foods, protect your sleep.
Risk Factor 34: Under-Vaccination
Each significant infection triggers neuroinflammatory cascades that accelerate neurodegeneration. A large population study found influenza vaccination associated with a 40% reduction in Alzheimer's incidence. The shingles vaccine showed significant dementia risk reduction in vaccinated individuals. To do: ask your physician to review your adult vaccination record — influenza, Shingrix, pneumococcal, and updated COVID boosters.

Questions
Is this only for people who already have a diagnosis?
No. This book is most valuable before a diagnosis — when the window for prevention is widest.
Do I need a medical background?
Not at all. It's written for patients and families, not physicians.
Technical terms are explained in plain language throughout.
Is this just general wellness advice?
No. Every risk factor is backed by peer-reviewed published research.
This is a clinical framework translated for a general audience.
How is this different from what my doctor has told me?
Most primary care visits allow 10 to 15 minutes, and 20 minutes at most.
This book represents what a neurology resident focused on memory care would tell you if you had an hour.
Will this work on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The PDF is formatted for reading on any device.
